Red Mold Fermented Products and Alzheimer's Disease: a Review

Alzheimer's disease is seen mainly in individualsover the age of 65, and the morbidity rate increaseswith age. Regarding the health function of Monascusfermentedred mold rice (RMR), besides hypolipidemicand hypotensive effects, other health functions of RMRsuch as anti-oxidation, cancer prevention, anti-fatigue, andanti-obesity have also been reported. Many publishedstudies have shown the efficacy of RMR in the preventionof Alzheimer's disease. The current article discusses andprovides evidence to support the beneficial potential ofRMR in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease by discussingthe pathogenic factors of Alzheimer's disease and thesecondary metabolites of Monascus.
